What is NMMSS?
The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme supports meritorious students from economically weaker families to continue their education beyond Class VIII. It provides one lakh fresh scholarships each year to eligible students entering Class IX who qualify in the selection examination conducted by their State or Union Territory. Renewal may continue through Classes X–XII, subject to scheme conditions.
The scholarship amount is ₹12,000 per year, transferred through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). It is not automatic for every student; eligibility, the selection test and renewal requirements apply.
Eligibility checkpoints
- Students must attend an eligible government, government-aided or local-body school under the scheme rules.
- Applicants generally need at least 55% or equivalent grade in Class VII; SC/ST students receive a five-percentage-point relaxation.
- Parental annual income must not exceed ₹3.50 lakh.
- Fresh applicants must qualify in the State/UT selection examination.
- Renewal beneficiaries must meet the applicable academic and administrative conditions.
Always check the detailed official scheme guidelines and State/UT notice for your case.
