Phases and activities

The Ministry of Defence says the opening ceremony took place on 21 October onboard INS Nilgiri and INS Kamorta. The harbour phase (21–23 October) includes professional interactions, subject-matter expert exchanges, cross-deck visits, sporting engagements and planning conferences.

The sea phase is scheduled for 24–26 October in the Bay of Bengal, with maritime operations and tactical drills including anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface and anti-air warfare, seamanship evolutions and tactical manoeuvres. These are announced programme details, not a claim that every planned activity has already concluded.

Why SIMBEX matters

Naval exercises help crews practise communication, procedures and coordinated operations. SIMBEX supports a longstanding maritime relationship between the Indian Navy and the Republic of Singapore Navy and helps build operational interoperability. An exercise is not itself a defence treaty or a guarantee of a specific operational outcome.

The Bay of Bengal is strategically important to the eastern Indian Ocean and regional sea routes. Cooperation at sea supports shared maritime awareness and safe navigation.

History and exam relevance

SIMBEX began in 1994 as Exercise Lion King. The 2026 event is the 33rd edition. Remember the participating navies, the original name, the year and the sea-phase location. Visakhapatnam is in Andhra Pradesh on India’s east coast.

  • Anti-submarine warfare (ASW): detecting, tracking and countering submarine threats.
  • Anti-surface warfare: operations directed at surface vessels.
  • Anti-air warfare: operations addressing airborne threats.
  • Bilateral exercise: an engagement between two countries, unlike a multilateral exercise.
