India-Pakistan Tensions

  • A ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan came into effect on May 10, 2025, following mediation by the United States.

  • Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed multiple ceasefire violations by Pakistan, declaring that the Indian Army would respond “adequately and appropriately.”

  • Pakistani drones were spotted across Jammu and Kashmir, Gujarat’s Kutch region, Punjab, and Rajasthan, with Indian air defense systems successfully intercepting several unmanned aerial vehicles.

  • Authorities enforced blackouts in multiple regions including Jammu, Kathua, Pathankot, Barmer, and the entire Kutch district as a precautionary measure.

  • A BSF sub-inspector, Mohammed Imteyaz, was killed and seven others were injured in Pakistani shelling along the International Border in Jammu’s R.S. Pura sector.

  • Pakistan reportedly targeted schools and religious sites along the Line of Control, resulting in the death of two students in Poonch.

Ukraine-Russia Conflict

Economic Projections

  • India’s growth forecast has been revised down from 6.5% to 6.2% for 2025, yet it remains the fastest-growing major economy globally.

  • The International Monetary Fund (IMF) projects India’s nominal GDP to reach $4.187 trillion in 2025, surpassing Japan’s estimated $4.186 trillion, which would make India the world’s fourth-largest economy.

  • By 2028, India’s GDP is projected to rise to $5,584.48 billion, potentially placing it ahead of Germany as the third-largest economy globally.

Inflation & Monetary Policy

  • India’s retail inflation dropped to 4.6% in the fiscal year 2024-25, marking a six-year low since 2018-19.

  • The year-on-year inflation rate for March 2025 fell to 3.34%, the lowest monthly inflation rate since August 2019.

  • The Bank of England reduced its Bank Rate by 0.25 percentage points to 4.25% on May 7, 2025, with the decision made by a majority vote of 5-4.

Banking Sector

  • The Reserve Bank of India imposed a penalty of ₹1.72 crore on State Bank of India for non-compliance with guidelines on loans and advances, customer protection, and current account opening procedures.

  • Jana Small Finance Bank faced a penalty of ₹1 crore for contravention of provisions under the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.

  • Banks across India remained closed on May 10, 2025, as it fell on the second Saturday of the month, in line with RBI guidelines.
