Recruitment guide | Updated 31 October 2026 | Reading time: 8–10 minutes

Indian Railways has opened a dedicated recruitment process for Station Masters through Centralised Employment Notice (CEN) No. 08/2026. The Ministry of Railways announced 1,265 vacancies across Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs), with online applications open from 27 October to 25 November 2026. The post is open to eligible graduates, subject to the detailed conditions in the official notification.
What happened?
The Railway Recruitment Boards have issued CEN 08/2026 for Station Master posts. The Ministry of Railways’ 27 October announcement states that the application window closes on 25 November 2026. The recruitment is notable because Station Master posts are being notified separately from 2026 onwards, rather than being grouped with other posts under the broader NTPC graduate recruitment notice.
The Ministry of Railways’ public announcement reports 1,265 vacancies. Candidates may encounter older vacancy summaries carrying a different figure, so use the detailed CEN, its latest official corrigenda and the RRB portal as the controlling documents. Do not rely on an old screenshot or an unofficial vacancy card when completing the application.

Vacancy details: 1,265 posts
The corrected total is 1,265 posts. The largest RRB-wise allocations announced are Mumbai (177), Jammu-Srinagar (122) and Chennai (119). Thiruvananthapuram has 114 and Prayagraj 112 in the detailed distribution. The RRB name identifies the recruiting board, not necessarily the final station or city of posting.
| RRB | Vacancies |
|---|---|
| Mumbai | 177 |
| Jammu-Srinagar | 122 |
| Chennai | 119 |
| Thiruvananthapuram | 114 |
| Prayagraj | 112 |
| Bengaluru | 102 |
The category-wise totals shown in the detailed vacancy annexure are UR 542, SC 176, ST 104, OBC 296 and EWS 147, adding to 1,265. The 133 ex-servicemen figure is a horizontal reservation count and should not be added again to the overall total. Vacancies may be revised by the Railway Administration; applicants must use the latest official annexure for their selected RRB and category.
Who can apply?
The Ministry of Railways’ announcement confirms that any graduate can apply, subject to the detailed eligibility conditions in CEN 08/2026. The qualification must be from a recognised university or an equivalent qualification accepted under the notice. Candidates should read the notification carefully if they are awaiting final-year results, have a degree-equivalence question or are relying on a qualification obtained through a particular mode of study.
The detailed CEN specifies the age, medical and other service conditions. The age reckoning date, relaxation rules, medical standard and category documentation must be checked directly in the official PDF. Do not rely on a general age range from an unofficial summary, because the relevant date and relaxation rules determine whether an applicant is eligible.
What does a Station Master do?
A Station Master is part of the operational chain responsible for safe and orderly train movement at a station. The role involves coordination with operating staff, train crews, signal and control functions, platform and yard operations, passenger movement and emergency response. The exact duties depend on the station, railway zone and operational arrangement.
It is a safety-sensitive position. Candidates should understand that the work is not limited to customer service or ticketing. Station operations require attention to procedures, communication, time discipline and the ability to respond correctly when normal operations are disrupted. Shift duty, night duty and responsibility for operational coordination may form part of the role.
Selection process
Applicants should follow the selection stages exactly as stated in CEN 08/2026. The recruitment process includes a computer-based test and a Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT), followed by document verification and medical examination, as prescribed in the notice. The aptitude stage is particularly important for Station Master recruitment because the job involves operational judgement and safety-related tasks.
The official notification governs the exam structure, qualifying requirements, negative marking, merit calculation and the weight assigned to the CBT and aptitude test. Do not assume that the pattern is identical to every RRB NTPC cycle. Download the syllabus and instructions from the same CEN page and prepare against that version.
How to apply online
- Open the official RRB website and locate CEN 08/2026 for Station Master.

- Use the official application portal at rrbapply.gov.in.
- Register or sign in using the account details required by the portal. Check that your personal details match your documents.
- Select the RRB and complete the application fields carefully. The chosen RRB and certain account details may not be changeable later; read the modification rules before submitting.

- Preview the completed form, submit it and save the final confirmation page for future reference.
Application checklist: avoid preventable errors
- Confirm that the degree and result status meet the notification’s requirements.
- Check the age calculation date and applicable category relaxation.
- Choose the RRB only after comparing its vacancy distribution and the railway zones listed under it.
- Check category certificates, EWS/OBC-NCL validity and ex-servicemen documents, where applicable.
- Use a working mobile number and email address that you can access throughout the recruitment process.
- Check the photo and signature specifications before uploading.
- Download the submitted form and payment receipt; do not rely only on a browser confirmation message.
Why this recruitment matters
Station Masters occupy a key operational role in the railway network. A separate notification gives applicants a focused recruitment route and makes the vacancy distribution easier to track. The total of 1,265 posts is also a substantial graduate-level opportunity, but the number alone should not drive the application decision. Applicants need to compare the RRB-wise vacancies, category distribution, medical requirements, selection stages and likely work conditions before choosing a board.
Preparation guidance
Begin with the official syllabus and divide preparation into the subjects and aptitude components actually listed in the CEN. Use timed practice, but do not spend all preparation time solving generic railway questions. Review mistakes, practise accuracy under time pressure and become familiar with the aptitude-test instructions. For a safety-sensitive operational post, understanding directions and following standardised procedures are as important as speed.
Admit card and result updates
The examination date, city-intimation schedule and e-call letter release should be treated as unannounced until the RRBs publish an official notice. This article is a recruitment guide, not an admit-card notice. When a city slip or call letter is released, use the official candidate login and check the personal date, shift, venue and reporting time. The candidate-specific e-call letter is the final source for exam-day instructions.
