Railway recruitment includes multiple examination families. Their eligibility, subjects, stages, medical standards and document requirements are not interchangeable. Use this page to choose the correct exam route, organise study and find official updates; always follow the latest Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) or Railway Recruitment Cell (RRC) notification for your CEN or recruitment notice.

Choose your railway exam family

Start with the official notification

  1. Identify the exact CEN/RRC notification number and post category.
  2. Check age cut-off date, qualification date, category relaxation and accepted certificates.
  3. Read the complete selection process, including CBTs, typing or aptitude tests, PET, medical examination and document verification where applicable.
  4. Save the official notice, corrigenda, application status, admit-card instructions and result notice.
  5. Use the official regional RRB/RRC portal linked from Indian Railways or the Ministry of Railways. Avoid lookalike application sites.

Official starting points: Indian Railways and Railway Recruitment Board Chandigarh. The correct regional board and notice depend on the recruitment.

Common CBT preparation areas

Depending on the notified exam, preparation may include Mathematics, General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness, General Science and technical or trade subjects. Do not assume that every RRB examination has the same subject weight, question count, duration or negative marking.

  • Mathematics: practise arithmetic, percentages, ratio, averages, time-work, speed-distance, algebra and data interpretation according to the syllabus.
  • Reasoning: develop accuracy in series, analogy, coding, relationships, directions, classification and other notified topics.
  • General Awareness: revise polity, geography, history, economy, science, transport-related knowledge and current affairs.
  • General Science: revisit school-level physics, chemistry and life science where included.
  • Technical/trade subjects: study the exact discipline and syllabus listed for JE, ALP, Technician or specialist recruitment.

Make practice measurable

  1. Take a diagnostic test to identify weak areas.
  2. Practise one topic at a time, then combine topics under the official time limit.
  3. Keep an error log with the reason for each wrong answer and the correct method.
  4. Reattempt incorrect questions after a delay rather than only reading the solution.
  5. Use full mocks to test time allocation; do not treat a mock score as a prediction of the final cut-off.

Physical, medical and document stages

Where a recruitment includes a Physical Efficiency Test or medical examination, review official requirements early. Physical standards and medical categories can be role-specific; clearing a CBT may not be the final selection stage. Keep original educational certificates, identity documents, category certificates and other documents required by the notice ready for verification. Do not rely on a general checklist in place of the exact notice.

Frequent mistakes

  • Applying for the wrong CEN or using a regional portal for an unrelated recruitment.
  • Confusing an application status with an admit card or final result.
  • Using old syllabus screenshots, cut-offs or vacancy totals without checking the notice.
  • Ignoring post preference, medical category or physical-test requirements.
  • Assuming an apprentice engagement is the same as a regular railway appointment.
