Choose the right route first
“Defence exam” is not one examination. The route depends on service, entry level, education stage and whether the role is commissioned officer, other rank, Coast Guard or police. A candidate who prepares only for a written paper can lose time if the route also requires physical tests, interviews, medical assessment or service-specific evaluation. Start by identifying the recruiting authority and entry for which you are eligible, then save that cycle’s notification.
| Exam / route | Broad purpose | Official starting point |
|---|---|---|
| NDA & Naval Academy | Officer-entry route for eligible school-leavers | UPSC |
| Combined Defence Services (CDS) | Officer-entry route for eligible graduates | UPSC |
| CAPF Assistant Commandant | Officer recruitment in notified Central Armed Police Forces | UPSC |
| AFCAT | Indian Air Force officer entry for notified branches | AFCAT portal |
| Agniveer / service-specific entries | Recruitment under current Army, Navy or Air Force notices | Indian Army · Indian Navy · Agniveervayu |
| Coast Guard CGEPT | Notified Navik and Yantrik entries | Indian Coast Guard |
| SSC GD / CPO | Constable and sub-inspector recruitment as specified by SSC | SSC |
| State police | State-specific constable, SI and related posts | Relevant state police / recruitment board |
Understand the selection stages
Written examination. Depending on the entry, papers may assess general knowledge, English, mathematics, reasoning, science or service-specific knowledge. Paper count, duration, qualifying rules and negative marking are cycle-specific. Do not transfer an older pattern to a new recruitment without checking the official scheme.
SSB or interview-based assessment. Officer-entry routes can include multi-day assessment of suitability, communication, judgement, group behaviour and leadership potential. Written preparation alone is not enough. Practise explaining decisions clearly, listening to others, solving group tasks constructively and discussing current national and international developments with evidence rather than slogans.
Physical and medical standards. Police, CAPF and service recruitment may include physical measurement, endurance or efficiency tests and detailed medical standards. They are not interchangeable across posts. Height, vision, event distances, timing, permitted relaxations and medical review procedures must be taken from the exact notice. Do not rely on an unofficial chart when eligibility is at stake.
Document verification. Names, date of birth, education records, category certificates, identity documents and other required records must match the application and notice. Review the checklist early and resolve discrepancies before the later stage.
A preparation system that works across exam families
- Create an eligibility sheet. Record age-calculation date, qualification, nationality, relaxations and physical or branch-specific conditions from the current notice.
- Map the syllabus. Separate common subjects from entry-specific papers. Mark topics as not started, learning, revision or test-ready.
- Use previous papers diagnostically. Attempt a timed paper, then classify errors as knowledge gaps, misreading, calculation, pacing or guessing.
- Keep current affairs selective. Prioritise defence exercises, commands and appointments, national security, science and technology, international organisations, geography, polity and major public programmes. Connect each news item to a stable concept instead of memorising headlines in isolation.
- Train physically with progression. Build consistency and recovery; avoid sudden increases in running volume. Seek appropriate professional guidance if a medical issue may affect exercise.
- Practise the complete process. Written mocks, physical preparation, interview practice where applicable and document checks should run in parallel.
How to use mock tests
A mock score is useful only when it leads to a decision. Record accuracy, attempts, time spent by section and marks lost to avoidable errors. Keep an error log with the question, reason, correct concept and date of re-test. Reattempt wrong questions after a few days without looking at the solution. For physical tests, track distance, time, recovery and consistency; one personal-best effort is not the same as reliable readiness.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming all defence or police jobs share one age limit or physical standard.
- Preparing from an old syllabus without checking the current notice.
- Confusing a shortlisting notice, written result, physical-test call letter and final selection list.
- Paying an intermediary who promises selection or asks for login credentials.
- Ignoring corrigenda, schedule changes or document-verification instructions.
Editorial standard: DailyGKUpdate separates evergreen preparation advice from cycle-specific recruitment news. When a notice changes the scheme, that current notice takes precedence over this guide. Individual vacancy articles should be published only when enough official information exists to give candidates a meaningful action.
