What Happened at SEMICON India 2026?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the fifth edition at Yashobhoomi on 17 September. The event closed on 19 September with a detailed presentation of India’s expanding semiconductor ecosystem. According to the Press Information Bureau, the conference recorded 51,656 registrations and cumulative footfall of about 40,000. More than 600 exhibitors participated, including approximately 300 international participants, alongside representatives from 52 countries.

The event also moved beyond policy discussion. Commercial semiconductor production lines were virtually inaugurated at CDIL Semiconductor, Mohali, for discrete devices and at Suchi Semicon, Surat, for packaging. With these additions, five commercial semiconductor units were operational among the 12 projects approved under Semicon 1.0.

The concluding announcements covered indigenous computing, RISC-V, artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, fab automation, startups, workforce development, advanced packaging and research. This matters because a semiconductor industry is not built by a fabrication plant alone; it needs an entire supply and knowledge chain around the plant.

Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said the new phase is intended to deepen the wider ecosystem rather than focus only on chip fabrication. PIB also reported that around 70,000 design engineers had been trained over four years and that the next phase would broaden access to industry-grade design tools and develop talent for system design and precision manufacturing.
