The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has published the final result of the Combined Geo-Scientist Examination 2026. The Press Information Bureau carried the official announcement on 16 October 2026, following the preliminary examination on 8 February, the main examination on 20–21 June and personality tests held in September. The result recommends candidates for six groups of posts spanning geology, hydrogeology, geophysics and chemistry.

Candidates should read the result notice and the linked merit list together. The notice provides post-wise vacancy and recommendation figures, identifies a small number of provisional results, and explains that appointment offers depend on verification and other prescribed formalities. A recommendation is an important selection milestone, but it is not a substitute for the Government’s appointment process.

How many vacancies and candidates are involved?

The UPSC notice lists 69 vacancies across the six post groupings. Adding the post-wise recommended-candidate figures published in the same notice gives 66 recommendations. These totals are derived from the official tables; they should not be read as a statement that every vacancy has been finally filled. Reservation-related provisions, non-availability of a candidate for a particular PwBD category, and the appointment process affect how individual vacancies are handled.

Post groupingVacancies reportedCandidates recommended
Geologist, Group A2120
Scientist B (Hydrogeology), Group A / Assistant Hydrogeologist, Group B2322
Geophysicist, Group A / Scientist B (Geophysics), Group A / Assistant Geophysicist, Group B54
Chemist, Group A1616
Scientist B (Chemical), Group A22
Assistant Chemist, Group B22
Total6966

The Geologist table notes that one current recruitment-year vacancy for a PwBD-3 candidate will be carried forward because a suitable candidate was not available. The Geophysics grouping also includes an official note that one OBC candidate will be considered against an unreserved vacancy. These details are why a simple vacancy-minus-recommendation calculation should not be treated as the complete reservation or appointment position.

How to check the result

  1. Open the official UPSC website and locate the Combined Geo-Scientist Examination 2026 result notice. The result PDF is also linked from the official PIB announcement.
  2. Open the merit-list PDF and use the PDF search function to locate your roll number or name. Check the relevant post heading because the merit list is arranged by post grouping.
  3. Confirm that you are reading the final result notice dated 16 October 2026, not an earlier preliminary or main-stage result.
  4. Save the official PDF for your records. If you are recommended, follow any subsequent communication from UPSC and the concerned department about document verification and appointment formalities.
  5. Keep checking the official UPSC website for the release of marks and any post-result instructions. Do not rely on third-party claims that an appointment letter has already been issued.

What does “provisional result” mean?

The official notice identifies certain roll numbers whose recommendations are provisional because original documents are awaited. It states that appointment offers for those candidates will not be issued until the required documents have been verified. The provisional status remains valid for three months from the date of declaration of the final result; if the required documents are not submitted within that period, candidature may be cancelled, and the notice says no further correspondence will be entertained in that situation.

For candidates whose result is provisional, the practical step is to read the exact notice, identify the outstanding document requirement and use the Commission’s official contact route if clarification is needed. Do not assume that every recommended candidate is provisional, or that provisional status applies to the entire result. The notice lists the affected roll numbers separately by post grouping.

Reserve list: what it does and does not mean

Under Rule 16 of the Combined Geo-Scientist Examination 2026, UPSC has maintained a consolidated reserve list for two sets of posts: Scientist B (Hydrogeology)/Assistant Hydrogeologist and Geophysicist/Scientist B (Geophysics)/Assistant Geophysicist. Each reserve-list grouping contains two candidates, one in the General category and one in the OBC category, as shown in the official notice.

A reserve list should not be treated as a separate final selection list for all vacancies. Its operation depends on the applicable examination rules and the circumstances in which it may be used. Candidates should rely on UPSC’s formal communication rather than infer appointment prospects from the existence of a reserve list alone.

When will marks be available?

The UPSC notice says candidates’ marks are likely to be made available on the Commission’s website within fifteen days of publication of the result. That is an indicative timeline in the notice, not a guaranteed release hour. Candidates should check the official portal for the actual marks link and any instructions for viewing it.

For questions or clarification relating to this examination, the notice provides the UPSC call-centre numbers 011-40303444 and 24041001, with operating hours of 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Candidates should use the contact details in the official notice if they need assistance.

Background: the examination stages

The 2026 cycle proceeded through three stages: Stage I Preliminary Examination on 8 February, Stage II Main Examination on 20 and 21 June, and personality tests during September. The final merit recommendations were made after those stages. The examination covers specialist scientific posts, so applicants should consult the relevant notification for post-specific educational qualifications, subject requirements and service conditions rather than assume that every post has identical eligibility.

Post groupings in the result include Geologist Group A; Scientist B (Hydrogeology) Group A and Assistant Hydrogeologist Group B; Geophysicist Group A, Scientist B (Geophysics) Group A and Assistant Geophysicist Group B; Chemist Group A; Scientist B (Chemical) Group A; and Assistant Chemist Group B.

What candidates should do next

  • Recommended candidates: retain the merit-list PDF and monitor official communication about verification and appointment.
  • Candidates with provisional status: check the notice for the exact roll number and outstanding document requirement, then act within the prescribed period.
  • All candidates: check the UPSC website for marks when released and keep personal contact details current wherever the official process requires it.
  • Future aspirants: use the official notification and syllabus for the next cycle. The separate UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist 2027 notification and preparation guide covers the next examination cycle; do not confuse its application dates with the 2026 final result.
